Believe it or not, unicorns are real and Strawberry is the living proof that they are the sweetest creatures on earth. This unicorn dog was once on a death row in a sanctuary, until a local rescue group saved her just in time. Today, Strawberry is enjoying her best life with her forever family.
In April 2022, Laura Labelle, who owns the Labelle Foundation in Los Angeles, was going through her daily stack of emails when she stumbled upon a photo of a pit bull. The email was from a shelter, warning that the pup was scheduled to be euthanized unless they found her a new home. However, there was something unique about this canine. She had a big bump above her left eye, which made her stand out from the rest.
Labelle shared with Daily Paws that she felt a strong connection with the little unicorn pup. She found her to be absolutely adorable and was worried that someone might adopt her before she had the chance to rescue her. Determined to save her, Labelle went to the shelter and quickly fell in love with the pup’s loving nature.
“When they introduced her to me, I couldn’t resist her sweet charm,” Labelle shares about her first meeting with the unique canine. However, Strawberry wasn’t in the best physical condition. In addition to her distinctive unicorn bump, Labelle noticed that the dog’s skin was in poor shape. It was covered in redness and scabs, which made the name Strawberry a fitting choice for her.
Labelle received numerous speculations about the bump on Strawberry’s head, with some suggesting it could be a tumor. Fortunately, the rescue was able to raise enough money for a CT scan, which revealed that the bump is just old scar tissue, most likely from a past injury. Although the origin of the injury is unknown, the good news is that the bump is harmless and does not cause Strawberry any discomfort. Surgeons have concluded that removing the bump would do more harm than good due to its proximity to her brain.
Labelle recalls being overjoyed when they discovered that Strawberry’s distinctive bump on her head was just a harmless scar, which only made them love her even more. Strawberry spent some time with Labelle before being placed in a foster home where she quickly became beloved by everyone in the household, including the family cat and children. Eventually, Strawberry was adopted by a wonderful family after they saw posts about her on the Labelle Foundation’s Instagram account. Kristen Kulhman and her family were drawn to Strawberry’s unique appearance and sweet temperament. Although Strawberry was initially nervous when she first arrived at her forever home, she has since become a fun and active dog who loves to play with her human siblings and go for walks.
Kulhman describes her as one of the most affectionate, loving, and snuggly canines she has ever encountered. Labelle emphasizes that there are numerous distinctive dogs like Strawberry that should not be overlooked and deserve a second chance. Recognizing that dogs have differences that make them even more special instead of undesirable is a beautiful gift, according to Labelle.
